  • the Freedom Film Festival welcomes you to the weekly series of films with a freedom theme, both entertainment and documentary – come on over and join us for the fun! Screenings are held in a home in Weare, New-Hampshire with a goal of outgrowing the living room and moving over to our Town Hall as the viewing venue. We believe the spirit of freedom should be a central theme for our town and what better place to promote that than our own Town Hall.

We hope you can help make that happen with your enthusiastic participation – we’d love for you to come enjoy the films, bring snacks and beverages, suggest/provide films for us to screen and to help promote the screenings to your friends and contacts. This will be a fun ride!

This week’s film is one of a series of dystopian future speculations, and this one contains an important principle that some of us call the THX factor.

…is George Lucas’s first feature film ( he did some in college ). This seems to be a little known film in our community, but interestingly shows the use of pharmaceuticals to control the population… Wait till you see it!

    Wikipedia says (

THX 1138 is a 1971 American science fiction film set in a dystopian future in which the populace is controlled through android police and mandatory use of drugs that suppress emotions. It was directed by George Lucas in his feature film directorial debut in 1971. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola and written by Lucas and Walter Murch, it stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence.

THX 1138 was developed from Lucas’s student film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which he made in 1967 while attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The feature film was produced in a joint venture between Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope. A novelization by Ben Bova was published in 1971. The film received mixed reviews from critics and failed to find box-office success on initial release; however, the film has subsequently received critical acclaim and gained a cult following, particularly in the aftermath of Lucas’s success with Star Wars in 1977.
