    Drugs, Weapons, Oil and War?

These have been topics we’ve been learning about (through previous films) and how they all play in together.

Does Hollywood actually spill the CIA’s beans by creating a comedic buddy movie about a very serious topic? We wonder why the actual name of the CIA’s drug-running operation is actually used. Well, this week was a night for an entertainment movie and here we have it, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. smuggling drugs in Laos!

Air America is a 1990 American action comedy film directed by Roger Spottiswoode, starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. as Air America pilots flying missions in Laos during the Vietnam War.[1] When the protagonists discover their aircraft is being used by government agents to smuggle heroin, they must avoid being framed as the drug-smugglers.

The plot of the film is adapted from Christopher Robbins1979 non-fiction book, chronicling the CIA-financed airline to transport weapons and supplies in Cambodia, Laos and South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.[2]

The publicity for the film, advertised as a light-hearted buddy movie, implied a tone that differs greatly from the actual film, which includes such serious themes as an anti-war message, focus on the opium trade, and a negative portrayal of Royal Laotian General Vang Pao (played by actor Burt Kwouk as “General Lu Soong”).[3]

    In a different Wikipedia listing:

Air America was an American passenger and cargo airline established in 1946 and covertly owned and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency from 1950 to 1976. It supplied and supported covert operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.
